Smile makeovers

Align, whiten, then bond: why the order of your smile makeover matters

The sequence matters: align, whiten, then refine with bonding where needed.

Most smile makeovers aren't one treatment. They're a sequence — and doing things in the right order can mean a more natural result with less of your own tooth touched.

You might see this called “ABB”: align, bleach, bond. The idea is simple. Each step makes the next one easier, smaller and more predictable.

1. Align

If teeth are crowded, rotated or pushed forward, bonding or veneers placed over them have to be built out to make everything look even. That means bulkier teeth — or, with veneers, more tooth removed to create a straight line.

Moving the teeth into a better position first with clear aligners such as Invisalign often means less material is needed afterwards. Sometimes, once teeth are straight, people realise they don't need much else at all.

2. Whiten

Composite and porcelain don't change colour with whitening gel. So if you bond first and whiten later, your natural teeth get lighter and the bonded ones don't — and they stop matching.

Whitening before bonding means your composite can be matched to your new, brighter shade. There's usually a short wait between finishing whitening and starting bonding so the shade can settle; your dentist will tell you how long.

Worth knowingIn the UK, tooth whitening is dentistry. It should only be carried out by a registered dental professional, not a salon or beauty kiosk.

3. Bond (or veneers)

Now the refinement: evening out edges, closing small gaps, correcting shape and proportion. Because the teeth are already straighter and brighter, this step is often smaller and more conservative than it would have been at the start.

4. Retain and maintain

Teeth naturally want to drift after aligner treatment, so retainers are part of the plan, not an optional extra. Bonding benefits from regular polishing and good hygiene, and whitening may need occasional top-ups to keep the shade matched.

Do you need all three?

No. Some people only need whitening. Some only need a little bonding on a chipped edge. Some need aligners and nothing else. The point of a plan is to find the smallest amount of treatment that gets you the result you want.

That's what the consultation is for: looking at your smile as a whole — teeth, gums, proportions, the way you talk and laugh — and working out the right route, in the right order.
